Work
Now that there is only two more weeks to go for the internship (it goes by so fast!), I feel like I have finally had an appreciation for what kind of work that Tax does as a Service Line.
Its quite varied and enjoyable. While I won’t go into details, especially since it might sound boring, when you are actually performing the work its actually not bad! So I’m here to say that doing a tax return = challenging and interesting, something I never thought I’d say.
Packing Extravaganza
Everyone is all packed up and ready to leave for our last day at the old Deloitte Building, its been a rush but we are all done now. When we all come back it will be in the shiny new Deloitte Centre on Queen Street!
I just wanted to take this time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you all next year.
Tax Christmas Event

Last Friday was the Tax Christmas Event. As with every year, everyone dresses up in costume to a certain theme. This year the theme was “streets”.
So teams came dressed as: Wall Street, Road Kill, Franklin Road and Queen Street. The transaction services team (my team) dressed as Street Fighters! Don’t we look great?
Held at Sale Street, we had a whole area to ourselves. Much fun was enjoyed by all!
Intern Volunteer day - Muriwai Beach
Yesterday was such an amazing day! The Deloitte Auckland interns all had the opportunity to go to a volunteer day, this year at Muriwai Beach.
It was a chance to give back to the community and have all the interns together again. We met outside Deloitte at 8.30am on a beautiful blue sky day, got on the bus and we were away!
Our volunteer activity this year was to help replant the flax at Muriwai beach. I can report back that today there are some sore muscles, blisters and few cuts. But I guess that exemplifies how the interns all gave 110%. It was great to meet the friendly park rangers and I’ll certainly give them wave next time I’m there.
Not only did we get a BBQ lunch (yum!), the ever lovely Bridget and Hayley also provided us with morning tea, afternoon tea, snacks, drinks and also a delicious chocolate cake for one of the interns (it was her birthday, happy birthday Yvette!). Even though we worked hard replanting the flax, I highly doubt anyone was hungry at the end of the day.
All in all, a great day and a very nice break in the working week. Can’t ask for better.

Work!
Tax lawyers and accountants have a reputation of being boring and “bean counters”, but throughout my internship this stereotype has been proven wrong again and again. Not only are the people I work with really nice, outgoing people but the work itself is not boring at all!
In terms of work, this week and last week has been pretty busy for my team (Transaction Services). I have been doing asked to do two tax returns simultaneously. You’d think that a tax return for a company would be pretty boring, but the work is actually pretty interesting. There are plenty of gritty accounting issues to sort out and it is a real exercise in logical thinking.
I have also written a file note (basically an essay) on the amalgamation regime in the Companies Act 1993. To write this, I had to do research in regards to something we never covered in lectures and it has been a real learning exercise.
So there we go, tax is really not that bad!

Deloitte Centre
As those of you in living in Auckland may have noticed, the new Deloitte building has been completed with Deloitte Auckland staff moving in after the New Year. How exciting!
We’ve begun preparations for the move and have charts around the current office showing everyone their new seating arrangements. There is definitely tangible excitement around the office and some apprehension as there are a lot of folders to pack!
Look forward to an assessment of the new building in upcoming blog posts.

A day in the life of a Tax Intern at Deloitte
Hey Guys,
My name is Alan and from today onwards I will be blogging about my experiences as a Summer Intern in Tax.
Hopefully I will be able to provide some insights on what a summer intern does during the three months we are at Deloitte and provide some interesting tidbits along the way!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I’d be happy to help.
